Fosamax (generic: alendronate) is a drug manufactured by Merck & Co. to treat or prevent bone diseases such as osteoporosis. It works in the short term by strengthening bones and reducing the risk of fracture. Unfortunately, Fosamax has been shown to cause bone deterioration after extended time in the human body, which is inevitable due to the drug’s long half-life. Upon remaining in the body long after it has been taken, Fosamax leads to deterioration of the jawbone and fractures of the femur. Osteonecrosis, also called jaw death, is a fatal condition in which the jawbone actually deteriorates away. There are currently more than 1000 lawsuits pending against Merck & Co. for this dangerous drug.
