Xarelto Can Pose Excessive Risks
Patients and doctors alike rely on drug manufacturers to ensure that their products are safe for use. Xarelto, an anticoagulant drug, has been linked to serious complications after use by patients. The manufacturers of Xarelto, Bayer HealthCare and Johnson & Johnson, have been accused of failing to adequately warn of the potential dangerous side effects, including severe internal bleeding, that may result from the drug’s use.
Dominguez Law helps patients and their families pursue legal action against manufacturers that put their health at additional risk by failing to provide safe medications. If you or a loved one has suffered a severe side effect after taking Xarelto, you may have a claim for compensation. Contact our attorneys today to find out more about your legal options.
Complications Associated With Xarelto Use
All prescription drugs have some side effects, and Xarelto is no exception. After being approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011, some common, recognized side effects associated with Xarelto include back pain, dizziness, swollen or bleeding gums, headaches, blood while urinating and others.
However, in the time since its approval, the FDA has received over 2,000 reports regarding more severe complications from the drug’s use. These serious side effects include:
- Uncontrollable or fatal bleeding
- Hematomas
- Pulmonary embolisms
- Cerebrovascular problems
Of these reported incidents, there have been 151 deaths associated with Xarelto use. Lawsuits have arisen claiming that the manufacturers knew of these risks but failed to warn patients or work to make the drug safer for consumption.
Are Xarelto Manufacturers Liable?
In New Mexico, product manufacturers may be held strictly liable for injuries associated with the use of their goods. Although most blood-thinning medications pose a risk of side effects, including bleeding, Xarelto is alleged to pose a much higher risk than certain alternatives. Claims against manufacturers associated with the use of the drug allege that the drug makers failed to disclose these risks, and in efforts driven solely by profit, they deceived the public regarding Xarelto’s benefits.
Some evidence suggests that Xarelto manufacturers may have failed to conduct the proper trials and research before marketing their drug to patients, and they also may have actively concealed knowledge of its association with uncontrollable bleeding.
